Our official playlist, “We’re Patterns in Repeat,” is HERE!

It is that time of year again! 2024 is the sixth year running that BAS has convened a group of the most passionate music nerds in our midst to compile a list of the year’s essential tunes for our readers. This year’s cohort consisted of about a dozen contributors who span the musical spectrum in terms of taste and practice. We had input from several working musicians, DJs, critics, talent bookers, and music teachers.

This was a year of sensational pop music phenomenon; Pop Girl Summer, The TDE Trifecta, and Kendrick versus Drake, all felt legitimately monocultural. Interestingly this year’s list had less consensus than our past collections. Only one album, Doechii’s remarkable Alligator Bites Never Heal garnered three entries. The top song was “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan which was selected by seven contributors. Kendrick Lamar appeared on seven different songs which were selected by at least two contributors. One album we wished we could have included was Diamond Jubilee, a monumental pop tour-de-force by multi-instrumentalist Cindy Lee. They have nobly chosen not to release the album to streaming services. While it is entirely possible that more than one tune from their record could have made the list, “All I Want Is You,” was a lock.

Every year, our process begins with each panelist submitting a list of songs for the group to consider. As in past years, we are also sharing a much larger playlist that includes every song submitted. This year’s big list, called “Our Favorite Songs of 2024 and it’s the Same but it’s Every Song We Chose So it’s Not,” includes over 1,000 selections and can be heard HERE.
